Migdalia Cruz - Math Major Turned Playwright

In case you've wondered about penning your own play, I thought this a most appropriate time to reach into my vault and share an interview that I did with playwright Migdalia Cruz earlier this summer when her play El Grito del Bronx premiered at the Goodman theatre and was produced by Collaboraction and Teatro Vista.

Diana: I read somewhere that you were originally a math major. How did you go from math major to playwright?

Migdalia:I was also a History minor, and took a class about Beckett. I thought it was about the English historical figure "Thomas A Becket, but instead it was about Samuel Beckett. When I saw how beautifully and poetically Beckett rendered the most horrible of human conditions, I thought becoming a playwright could be an incredible gift. So I dropped the Calculus. When I get stuck on my plays, I sometimes add big numbers. I figure anything on paper is good. It also relaxes me. Strange, huh? Math stresses a lot of people, but not me. But once I faced the fact that writing was what would truly make me happy, I remembered that I had written my first play when I was six years old—a puppet play about Civil Rights. So I suppose I was really just acknowledging what I always knew in my heart. Math was fun, but writing was life.

Diana: What advice do you give to emerging women playwrights?

Migdalia: Respect your history, listen to your ancestors, tell the truth, and write your own story—or someone else will write it and get it all wrong.

Diana: Can you give us a sneak peek at some of the other plays you might be working on?

Migdalia: Hmmm...I'm not sure how much I should tell you— I have been working for a while on an adaptation of Petronius' Satyricon, which will include both reggaeton & the music of Nino Rota. And I have recently started thinking about a play about real Puerto Rican Pirates to whom I am related. Enough said.

Renowned Mexican-American performance artist Guillermo Gómez-Pena and his San Francisco-based “trans-disciplinary organization,” La Pocha Nostra, will be a Critical Encounters Artist-in-Residence in partnership with the Institute, the Center for Teaching Excellence and the Center for Community Arts Partnerships. La Pocha Nostra will lead an intensive artist workshop incorporating and challenging ideas of race, gender, faith, and boundaries that will continue into the Spring semester and culminate in a group project as part of the 6th annual Gender Fusions. On October 30, La Pocha Nostra will debut a new performance on campus, Corpo/Illicito: The Post-Human Society #69, exploring the legacy of fear inherited by the Bush administration and the emerging culture of home, imagination and faith.

Well the lazy days of summer our almost over and with September around the corner it's time to flex those writing muscles. Next month Ana Castillo returns to the Windy City to offer her Más Writing Workshop. Irasema Gonzalez, Coya Paz, Yolanda Cardenas and I had an opportunity to take her last writing workshop. It was thought provoking and very useful for anyone wanting to write memoir.

"We’ll write from our hearts and our minds. And then, we’ll learn to get rid of all the sentimentality and leave on the page what is important for the reader to know about your memoir". -Ana Castillo

This workshop welcomes back previous participants. It will include first time participants. Together, you’ll take a look at writing-in-progress, learn workshop method and discuss new writing tips and techniques.

In memoir, the reader must be persuaded that the narrator is writing honestly, whether or not he/she is, is secondary. It doesn’t matter as much ‘what happened’ as what you make of what you remember may have happened.The workshop will consist of exercises, which help us to know how to get started when desiring to work on a memoir essay.

Little Village Literary Landscaper Irasema Gonzalez Is Featured In July Proyecto Latina Reading Series

In a neighborhood on the South Side of the city that often gets over looked and arts funding is next to nonexistent Proyecto Latina will host its first reading series in Little Village to reach out to Latinas of all ages and encourage them to come out and share their own writing about their lives and neighborhood.

The feature includes local writer and Little Village resident, Irasema Gonzalez, on Monday, July 20th at 7pm at the Chicago Public Library Toman Branch, FREE and open to the public.

She will be sharing her reflections on growing up in the Little Village and what it means to be a woman in that part of the city. “I am really hoping that Little Village writers (I know they’re out there and I want to meet them) come out to join me in sharing their work through our open mic," says writer Irasema Gonzalez.

Irasema Gonzalez is a writer and merchant. She is the owner of Tianguis.biz the current incarnation of her former book and teashop in Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood"which is also the exclusive distributor for Momotombo Press. She is passionate about books that tell the stories of the Latino community. Also, a founding member of the Proyecto Latina reading series and the co-producer for the Proyecto Latina Radio Show at Radio Arte. Her poems appeared in the Ariel XXVIII (Triton College, 2009), Afternoon Wine: Vicios, Sueños y Confesiones (Maravilla Writing Collective’s chapbook, 2006), and in Between the Heart and the Land: An Anthology of Midwestern Latina Poets by March Abrazo Press, 2000. She has presented featured readings at venues throughout the city including: Palabra Pura, the Sor Juana festival and Poetry Fest at the Chicago Public Library. She is a graduate of Columbia College Chicago, where she earned a B.A. in journalism and creative writing. She resides in Little Village with her family and is giddy about hosting and featuring at Proyecto Latina in La Villita this July.

NHLI 2009 Executive Leadership Training Conference & Mujer Awards Gala Poster Artwork Contest

The National Hispana Leadership Institute (NHLI) invites Latina artists nationwide to submit artwork (in all media including paintings, sculptures, photography, etc.) that celebrates Latinas/Hispanic women. NHLI – a national 501 (c) 3 organization based in Washington, DC – was established in 1987 to address the underrepresentation of Latinas in the corporate, non-profit and political arenas. NHLI will use the winning image to promote the 2009 Executive Leadership Training Conference and Mujer Awards Gala to be held November 5-6 2009 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. NHLI will credit the artist in promotional materials during and after the conference included but not limited to: 2009 Mujer Award poster, award certificates, program cover, bags, mouse pads, annual report, and NHLI note cards.

Requirements

The call is open to Latina artists 18 years and older from across the United States.
Entries will be juried from jpg entries submitted electronically or via CD. No other formats will be accepted.
The submitted images will have a minimum of 200 dots per inch (dpi). Image must be able to be reproduced at 300 dpi at a minimum of 18x24 inches, for printing purposes.
Each file should be numbered (1, 2, 3) and include entrant’s last name and first name (i.e. lastname_firstname_1.jpg, lastname_firstname_2.jpg and lastname_firstname_3.jpg).
Original work cannot exceed 3 feet in any dimension or weigh more than 50 lbs.
No frontal nudity or inappropriate images will be accepted.

The deadline for submissions is June 1, 2009, 5:00 PM EST. Artists will be notified of the decision by July 1, 2009.

Prizes:

1st Prize: $1,000 (U.S.) and the opportunity to showcase and exhibit original artwork at the Mujer Awards Gala art reception on Friday, November 6, 2009. The artist will be able to showcase up to 5 pieces at the art reception, including the winning entry. In addition, NHLI will provide an exhibitor’s table for the artist to promote and sell her work during the general conference and tickets to all conference meal, and non-meal functions. NHLI will also provide a full-page advertisement in the conference program for further promotion of the artist and the selected piece. Please note NHLI reserves the right to keep the original artwork.

Proyecto Latina welcomes Tanya Saracho back this April, we will be featuring a sampling of the full-length play and her adaptatation of the Sandra Cisnero's book The House on Mango Street. Tanya will also share the art process of how she took a lyrical narrative and modified it for the stage.

The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros is celebrating its 25th anniversary in print. This Spring its been chosen as the One Book One Chicago for the city to read.

Tanya Saracho was born in Sinaloa, México and moved to Texas in the late 80's . She is the Co-Founding Artistic Director of Teatro Luna: Chicago's All-Latina Theatre, and a resident playwright at Chicago Dramatists and Teatro Vista. Tanya's writing has been featured in most of Teatro Luna's ensemble-built works including "Generic Latina," "Dejame Contarte," "The Maria Chronicles," "SOLO Latinas," "SOLO Tú," "S-E-X-Oh!" and "Lunatic(a)s." Her plays include: "Our Lady of The Underpass" with Teatro Vista (2009), "Surface Day" with Chicago Children's Humanity Festival (2008 ), and "Jarred (A Hoodoo Comedy)" with Teatro Luna (2008). Tanya's play "Kita y Fernanda," a finalist for the 2003 Nuestras Voces playwrighting competition, received productions at Teatro Luna (2003) and 16th Street Theatre (2008). Other Awards include: The Ofner Prize given by the Goodman Theatre, Finalist for the Christopher B. Wolk Award at Abingdon Theatre in NYC, nominee for the Wasserstein Prize and winner of the Khan Award. Saracho's solo play "Quita Mitos" received a world premier with Teatro Luna in November of 2006 and has toured colleges and festivals, including the International Hispanic Theatre Festival and the Goodman's Latino Theatre Festival. Tanya is working on a fellowship in a collaboration between The Goodman Theatre and the Institute for Women and Gender Studies at Columbia College on an interview-based piece titled "27" where she will interview one woman from each of the 27 countries that make up the Latin Diaspora. She is also under commission from Steppenwolf Theatre to craft a musical adaptation Sandra Cisnero's "The House on Mango Street" slated to open in the fall of 2009. Directing/co-directing credits include: "SOLO Tú," "S-E-X-Oh!" and "Lunatic(a)s." the remount of "Generic Latina," "The Maria Chronicles," "Jarred (A Hoodoo Comdey)" and "SÓLO Latinas." Tanya's performing credits include: Neil Labutte's "Fat Pig" with Renaissance Theatreworks in Milwaukee, Migdalia Cruz' "Another Part of the House" with Teatro Vista, "Living Out" with American Theatre Co./Teatro Vista, "Electricidad" at Goodman Theatre and "La Casa De Bernarda Alba" with Aguijon Theater. Tanya's voice can be heard around the country in radio and television commercials.

Everyone needs a little S-E-X-OH in their life...

Originally produced to great acclaim and sold-out houses, S-E-X-Oh! is Teatro Luna’s fourth original ensemble built show, taking up the intersections between sex, gender, and latinidad. Based on Teatro Luna's true life stories, plus a few strategic re-imaginings, S-E-X-Oh! takes aim at sexuality in irreverent and fearless Teatro Luna fashion: Anything from the Virgin Mary, to Biblical Stories; from Video Games to Trader Joe's is up for grabs.

I saw the show the first time it was produced and really enjoyed it. I'm excited to see the new cast which features a new crop of Latina Talent: Stephanie Gentry Fernandez, Hannah Gomez, Diane Herrera, Christina Nieves, Maria Enriquez, and Selene Mojica

S-E-X-Oh! has some strong language and is presented in English with a sprinkle of Spanish

The Brown Girls' Chronicles: Puerto Rican Women and Resilience
is a collection of the stories, voices and songs that long to be heard;
the stories of how race, ethnicity, gender, and colonialism shape the
lives of marginalized women.

Written and directed by Yolanda Nieves, The Brown Girls' Chronicles
are the stories of second generation Puerto Rican women who in their
day-to-day lives are the embodiment of struggle for independence of mind,
soul, heart and body.

The Brown Girls' Chronicles is the long-time realized desire of Nieves to
continue the construction of her identity, a desire shared by her generation
and by the youth of Chicago too.  The show, based on the collection of
interviews from scores of second generation Puerto Rican women, is
perfectly described as "…a vibrant and truthful perspective of the Puerto Rican
woman's experience in Chicago..." by cultural/artistic activist Carlos Flores, "
...it eradicates an existing void."

Opening night tickets are $25 and include a post-show Q&A session and reception
with the director and The Vida Bella Ensemble cast.  For premier night tickets,

Lucky Friday Underground

Well this weekend I was feeling pretty lucky to have been invited to go to the 2nd Sun Salon hosted by Lisa Lee, Krista Franklin and Duriel E. Harris. It was such a wonderful experience to be surrounded by so many creative people. I am always inspired by people making an impact on the arts. The readings were incredible to say the least!

La Mocosas Gritan

La Mocasas Gritan was the name of a panel that included former participants of Sandra Cisnero's Macondo workshop in San Antonio. I was thrilled when I saw this panel listed in the AWP program book. Making my way through the throngs of conference attendees I began to think of how fortunate I was to be able to attend the conference with the support of of Dra.Cardenas (mil gracias).

When I get to the room it is already packed and I grab a seat in the back. Looking at the audience I'm excited to see so many Latinos. I try not to look at the carpeting or the wall paper in this room because it gives me anxiety.

I peek at the women on the panel that include: Lorraine Lopez, Gabriela Jaurequi, Angie Chau, Daisy Hernandez, Erin Badhand and Laura Negrete.

The panel begins and they all begin to read their work. I felt so proud to be listening to the works of these writers. Their work all varied and I walked away feeling inspired by their creativity.

The moderator mentioned that the Macondo workshop is now has open applications and the deadline is in April.

The Macondo Foundation works with dedicated and compassionate writers who view their work and talents as part of a larger task of community-building and non-violent social change. Macondo is a community of poets, novelists, journalists, performance artists, and creative writers of all genres whose work is socially-engaged. What unites us is a commitment to serve our under-served communities through our writing.

Officially incorporated in 2006, the Macondo Foundation has its roots in the Macondo Writing Workshop (named after the sleepy town in Gabriel García Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude), which began in 1995 in the kitchen of poet and writer Sandra Cisneros. The Workshop rapidly grew from 15 to more than 120 participants in less than nine years. During that time, the Macondo Workshop expanded its community involvement through annual events with the Our Lady of the Lake University, UT-San Antonio, Trinity University, Esperanza Peace and Justice Center, Jump-Start Performance Theatre, Casa de Maria y Marta and the Bexar County Juvenile Detention Center. Macondo currently makes its home at Our Lady of the Lake University.

Beserk At The AWP Book Fair

It's a bad idea to put me in a room with aisle after aisle of book vendors. Well this is what happened at the AWP book fair. My upper lip quivered as I looked out into an ocean of book vendors in the NorthEast Hall of the Hilton.

Slithering into the aisles swooning paper backs and hard cover and lusting after words dressed in their finest font sizes I caved in. This is my kryptonite and I am in bliss.

This book one the American Book Award and I love poetry so can't go wrong with that.

Interlochen Review is part of the Interlochen Arts Academy's Creative Writing Department and just seemed like an overall good read.

Controlled Decay by Gabriela Jaurequi
This poet threw down at the AWP conference. Her poetry catapults itself dangerously off her lips and into your ears. She lives in Mexico City and has a foundation for immigrant students wanting to study the arts.

Michelle Otero is the author of Malinche's Daughter (Momotombo Press, 2006), an essay collection based on her work with women survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in Oaxaca, Mexico. Her work has appeared or is forthcoming in Artful Dodge, Puerto del Sol, Upstreet, Brevity, Great River Review, and Metamorfósis, a Spanish-language anthology published by the National Hispanic Cultural Center. Her awards include a Fulbright Fellowship, an Association of Writing Programs Intro Journal Award, and fellowships from the Anderson Center, the McCune Foundation and the Barbara Deming Memorial Fund. Otero is a founding member of The Women Writers' Collective, an El Paso-based group that showcases the talents of women writers and artists while raising awareness of women's issues. In Albuquerque, she performs with Las Meganenas, a repertory theatre troupe that uses performance to raise awareness of issues facing Latinas. She holds a B.A. in History from Harvard University and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Vermont College.

In memoir, the reader must be persuaded that the narrator is writing honestly, whether or not he/she is, is secondary. It doesn’t matter as much ‘what happened’ as what you make of what you remember may have happened.

The workshop will consist of a number of exercises, which help us to know how to get started when desiring to work on a memoir essay.

We’ll talk, we’ll laugh, we’ll cry. We’ll vent. We’ll write from our hearts and our minds. And then, we’ll learn to get rid of all the sentimentality and leave on the page what is important for the reader to know about your memoir.

Three hours with Ana Castillo, poet, novelist—all around genre-jumper and in this case, workshop leader. She is also la presidenta of La Sociedad de Holy Jodidos which, she founded in New Mexico in 2008.

In 2005, Stephanie Elizondo Griest ventured to her mother’s native Mexico to do a little root-searching and improve her “Tarzan Lite” Spanish. She stumbled upon a burgeoning social movement that shook parts of the nation to its core. MEXICAN ENOUGH chronicles her journey, from the narco-infested border town of Nuevo Laredo to the highlands of Chiapas. She investigates the murder of a prominent gay activist, sneaks into prison to meet with resistance fighters, rallies with rebels in Oaxaca, and interviews scores of migrant workers and the families they were forced to leave behind. Travel companions include a Polish thief, a Border Patrol agent, and a Dominatrix. Hope you are having a restful and warm Sunday!

On many occasion my mom Adela would be sitting in her wicker chair in the living room watching those scandalous novellas on Channel 44 and she’d watch me come in and say, No más te la pasas de pata de perro.

The truth is it’s true and yesterday was no exception. Last night, I had the opportunity to go check out Adelita, Pata de Perro exhibit over at Tianguis Bookstore. Pata de perro has always been one of my favorite sayings!

The cozy space glowed with warmth, good vibes and the wonderful art of Jenny Priego. This is her first exhibit ever! Hopefully, it will be the beginning of many more exhibits. This month also marks the 96th Anniversary of the Mexican Revolution.

What would the Mexican Revolution be without La Adelita?

Adelita is a woman warrior known as a soldadera or woman soldier.They fought in battle against the Mexican government forces and cared for the wounded. They were a vital force in the revolutionary war efforts.

The term La Adelita has since come to signify a woman of strength and courage.

They’ve even written songs about Las Adelitas:

En lo alto de la abrupta serranía
acampado se encontraba un regimiento
y una musa que valiente los seguía
locamente enamorada del sargento.

Popular entre la tropa era Adelita
la mujer que el sargento idolatraba
y además de ser valiente era bonita
que hasta el mismo Coronel la respetaba.

Y se oía, que decía, aquel que tanto la quería:

Y si Adelita quisiera ser mi novia
y si Adelita fuera mi mujer
le compraría un vestido de seda
para llevarla a bailar al cuartel.

The work according to Priego, “ It’s photograghic journal of Adelita, a character that was inspired by the women who fought in the Mexican Revolution. Priego's Adelita is a hyper-ethnic woman wandering the world on an ever changing journey, and on her voyage of discovery she encounters symbols of power, femininity, sex, and cultural imagery. She finds herself in different situations and places that take her from Paris, to Rome and sugar cane mills in Mexico. There are thousands of photographs that have been collected over the last six years, for the first time ever Priego will be exhibiting a small portion of embellished and adorned original pieces that were taken in Paris.”

Priego recently did an interview on Proyecto Latina Radio.

A telenovela for the stage, created by Pilsen and Little Village teens from Latinos Progresando's Teatro Americano, will be presented this weekend at DePaul's Lincoln Park campus.

"Fronteras del Amor/Borders of Love" was enthusiastically received when it premiered in August at the National Museum of Mexican Art. Following shows this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evening, a four-week run is planned for next spring, said director Ricardo Gamboa.

Twenty-two young people developed material for the play during a seven-week theater workshop this summer. Along with intensive theater training they took workshops in youth, immigration and health issues. Through improvisations, journal writing and creative writing, and group discussions, they explored a range of topics and found and created stories relevant to them, Gamboa said.

Together they came up with frameworks, characters and situations needed to address specific issues, he said. "If we're going to talk about youth issues, we need a moment where someone is confronted by a gang; we need a moment where someone's confronted with sex or sexuality and has to make a decision; you need a moment where there's generational conflict." Gamboa and co-instructor Steven Beaudion took the frameworks and the multitude of stories and ideas generated by the teens and sketched out a script over a weekend.

Unlike standard telenovelas, which like soap operas tend to portray the lives of the wealthy, "Fronteras" focuses on the young workers at Los Milagros Taqueriea and the issues they face (including love, of course). The show also includes satirical commercials (one is for Border Runner sneakers).

The result is "esthetically on a par with the professional work that comes out of the city, and definitely more socially relevant than a lot of it," said Gamboa, who also works with the Barrel of Monkeys theater company. The comparison to TV dramas in the U.S., which almost exclusively exploit youth issues for their violence, is particularly striking, he says. "You can get a group of 22 young people off the streets of Chicago, and they can present something that's more sophisticated and thoughtful and nuanced" than professionals at the top of their field.

"Fronteras del Amor/Borders of Love" will be presented Friday, November 21 and Sunday, November 23 at DePaul's Corleylou Commons, 2324 N. Fremont, and Saturday, November 22 at the Student Center, 2250 N. Sheffield. All shows are at 6 p.m. Admission is $10.

Students from NMMA's Radio Arte WRTE also particiated in the workshop and created radionovels which are available on compact disc.

The Moon, Obama and the Jumbotron

I'm sitting on the 22nd Floor of the Cliff Dwellers with my Community Media Workshop Family.

MSNBC reports Kentucky looking a little red. We are streaming the news onto a projector and between mouthfuls of delicious cheeseburgers contemplating the evening that lays ahead.

From the windows we can see throngs of people streaming into Grant Park. The people are all silhouettes in the darkness of November. They've got the Jumbotrons up and running and people are flocking to them. We are surprised that Lakeshore Drive is still open. Perhaps, they will close it later on tonight.

They are projecting Elizabeth Dole losing her seat in the senate and it would be the first time a Dole or Bush didn't hold that seat since 1952. The moon is starting to come out and it's just the perfect night for the city of Chicago.

There isn't much going on in our office. I feel nervous and excited all at the same time. Even my anxiety eating has come to a complete halt.

I'm trying not to drink coffee because for sure I will go into cardiac arrest. What impact will this have on the arts in Chicago and the rest of the nation? I don't know but it's something to think about. My co-workers are all silent and typing away. I could use a dose of sunshine right now. When I was at lunch I spied the Obama T-shirt I want. Dang now I need a drink to calm my election day jitters. My brother Mark will be at a bar near the rally and my cousin Alicia (so jealous) will be in Hutchinson Park. She scored her Obama tix early! Meanwhile, my sister Ada will be drinking tea and watching the election on the news in Mexico City wondering how it will all turn out and in a small pueblo named Julimes my father will gather with the rest of our family and watch the elections and wonder how we are doing in the city he left behind? As for me, I will be your Proyecto Latina radio correspondent for the night live from downtown bringing you mini-updates. My first stop will be dinner on the rooftop of Cliff Dwellers on Michigan Ave. and then I will hit the ground running and be your eyes and ears for the evening.

Well folks it's that time again, the Presidential elections are today.

There is no better moment than to exercise your right to vote.

Ladies listen up, this means you.

In 1920 the Constitution was amended to give women the right to vote.

Women play many roles in this country and are key decision makers.

Let's take action and make sure the voices of women are heard today at the polls.

Mabel F. Yee, founder of Engageher.org, poses the following questions:

Where are the women voters in this election?

How come no one ever hears about the Asian American women and other women of color who happen to number over 30 million registered voters in the United States today?

Mabel says, "Perhaps it's the startling revelation that in the 2004 elections 70 percent of Asian Americans, 69 percent of Latinas and 40 percent of African American registered women voters FAILED to vote."

She cited three distinct areas of why women of color haven't gone to the polls in the past: cultural, social and political.

Engageher.org is an online organization focused on educating and activating minorities, women and communities to mobilize around issues which impact their lives and communities. This organization encourages people to take action and create change.

There is no better moment than this one to exercise your constitutional right.

I wanted to take a moment to send you happy voting vibes and share a post by Editorial Consultant Marcela Landres had some wonderful things to say about this week's election.

"Unless you are a political writer, you probably don't consciously think about politics when you write. Yet, the government wields enormous influence over your writing life. Politicians decide how much (or how little) money to allocate towards the arts, libraries, and schools. If art funding is cut, how many non-profit presses and literary journals will disappear?

If library budgets decrease, how many of the remaining dollars will be spent on Latino books? If educational resources dwindle, how much time and attention will be devoted to creative writing classes? Voting is not only a political act; it is a creative one. With your pen or keyboard, you shape future generations of readers and writers, but voting is how you shape your future. You create your art by writing, and you create your country by voting.

On November 4th, put down your pens, walk away from your keyboards, and vote. Don't vote alone. Grab your abuelita, best friend, significant other, boss, staff, preacher, congregation, teacher, class, mentors, and protégées and make sure they vote too. On this election, it is not sufficient for individuals to vote—we must vote as a community. "

Marcela posed the follow question to various writers: Given that the President makes decisions that affect the arts, why is it important that Latino writers —as members of the largest minority in the U.S. and as members of the artistic community—vote on November 4th?

"This election demonstrates that our government officials and wannabes want us and the world to believe that a typical American is "Joe Six Pack', `Joe the Plumber', and `Soccer Mom.' These stereotypes are meant to counter the terror-induced image of Americans as intellectual, high minded, eloquent. These luddites don't openly say that Joe Six Pack, Joe the Plumber
and Soccer Moms don't read, don't go to museums, don't think too much or too deeply about anything beyond the basic necessities. That might be offensive. But they loudly proclaim that the `average American' prefers to drink reality into oblivion through liquor, are obsessed with sewage, and prefer to stand on the sidelines while someone else runs after the ball. It is up to
intellectuals and artists to proudly and loudly elevate the discourse and to ennoble and dignify what it means to be an average or typical American. These are not issues of ethnicity or race. They are issues of citizenship." —Esmeralda Santiago, author of "When I Was Puerto Rican," "Almost a Woman," "America's Dream," and "The Turkish Lover"

"As I'm thinking about the upcoming election, the needs of our nation are far more important than my personal needs as a writer. Our nation is facing enormous challenges--a financial crisis, two wars, a health care crisis, a broken education system--that hit the lowest on the socio-economic ladder, including many Latinos, hardest. We can't thrive as individuals or as artists if all our time and energy is spent on thestruggle to survive.

Latino writers, many of us immigrants or the children of immigrants, are especially sensitive to the importance of financial and social stability. We value the rights we are granted here, including freedom of speech. When we vote for a candidate who will work to improve living conditions for all Americans, and not just those on the upper tiers of society, then we all

"No one said it better than Audre Lorde. She wrote, "Poetry is not a luxury. It is a vital necessity of our existence. It forms the quality of the light within which we predicate our hopes and dreams toward survival and change, first made into language, then into idea, then into more tangible action." As a cultural activist, I've witnessed the veracity of this statement time and again. But the myth that art and entertainment are apolitical not only remains pervasive, it hurts most those communities who have a history of marginalization in the United States. Even a cursory glance at the history of social movements in this country will reveal a strong artistic component.

Latin@s may be the fastest growing minority in the U.S., but I think the current presidential campaign proves that the Black-White racial paradigm continues to exist. Art and entertainment is the way we assert our visibility, imprinting the collective consciousness with our views of the way the world is but also our vision of how it could be. This is true whether we write literary magical realism or commercial "chica lit." Therefore, Latin@ artists of all stripes must get to the polls on November 4th to support the candidate we believe will invest in the arts and unequivocally stand against censorship regardless of his personal views and aesthetic."

Proyecto Latina is a monthly open mic bringing together the best emerging and established Latina poets, writers and performers.

Diana Pando will be reading a selection of poems that she is compiling for a future chapbook called The Daze and Nights of Mariposa Atómica. She is a poet / writer and likes to flex her public relation skills to support Latinos in the arts and nonprofits impacting Latina women and girls.

Diana’s kryptonite includes: Cupcakes, military history, coffee, social media and dancing with her niece in the aisles of el Gigante supermarket in Mexico City.

Her current projects include: Co-producer of Proyecto Latina Radio on 90.5 WRTE and one of the founders of Proyecto Latina, open mic a collaborative project between Tianguis Bookstore, Teatro Luna and Mariposa Atómica Ink. Recently two of her poems have been selected for a Mexican/Chicano anthology being published through DePaul University.

Over the summer she became Teatro Luna’s newest artistic associate. She is part of a writing ensembles for American Theatre Company’s Border Project Initiative, Teatro Luna’s Restaurant Spanish and a future Teatro Americano production. At this time she maintains a blog called Art Botanas. She is a current member of the Latina Leadership Council of the Chicago Foundation for Women and the Latino Giving Circle of the Chicago Community Trust.

Her vision is to continue to build community between the arts and philanthropic community.
She is the former managing director for Teatro Vista and has worked with DeLaTorre Fine Arts, Teatro Luna and Luna Negra Dance Theatre as well as a former contributing writer for Dinero Magazine. She has been a local featured poet for Palabra Pura an open mic initiative through the Guild Complex.

She has also been a contributing writer for the critically acclaimed Teatro Luna show MACHOS. Currently, she is thrilled to be a Sr. communications trainer for the Community Media Workshop helping nonprofit organizations tell their stories and promoting news that matters.

Frances Treviño de Santos was first published by Pecan Grove Press in 1999 in a chapbook Mama & Other Tragedies. That same year, she was a fellow for the National Endowment for the Humanities for integrating U.S. Latino Literature in the secondary classroom. She is the recipient of the 2000 Premió Poesía Tejana Award for The Laughter of Doves, which was published through Wings Press. In 2001 she received a grant from the Alfredo Cisneros del Moral Foundation. Her current book of poems, Cayetana, is also published by Wings Press. From 1999-2002, she was a member of "Women of Ill-Repute: Refute!" - a performance group that deconstructed issues of culture and identity. Treviño de Santos teaches British Literature to high school students for the San Antonio Independent School district.

Tony del Valle is a published writer of fiction, creative non-fiction, and poetry. For the past thirty years he performed as a singer, pianist and guitarist in a touring orchestra and recorded several albums of Latin music as composer, arranger, songwriter, and pianist. He also has taught music and visual arts in the Humboldt Park community where he painted various murals. He is currently seeking to publish a novel entitled The Royal Road, part of which has appeared in Chicago West Side Stories. Del Valle has presented his fiction, poetry, research, and music performances at various conferences, workshops and community events, and he continues his work as a professor of English.

Join us for a discussion with Elena Poniatowska, renowned Mexican journalist, professor and author best known for her 1971 work La noche de Tlatelolco (Massacre in Mexico), in which she relates her interviews with survivors and families of the student demonstrators killed ten days prior to the 1968 Summer Olympics by the Mexican government in the Tlatelolco massacre. Elena will share stories regarding the massacre and the families she interviewed. This year’s Day of the Dead exhibition, La Vida Sin Fin, is dedicated to the those killed by the Mexican government in the Tlatelolco massacre of Mexico City, 40 years ago.

Elena Poniatowska was born in Paris in 1932 to Prince Jean Evremont Poniatowski Sperry, a descendant of the brother of King Stanislaus II of Poland, and Paula Amor-Escadón. Elena fled France during World War II and moved to Mexico with her family as a child. She studied in the United States and returned to Mexico in 1953 to start her career as a journalist. Elena’s journalism and writing explore and grapple with major events. Her works also include Hasta no verte Jesús mio, Tinísima, a biography about Tina Modotti, the Italian photographer, Nothing, Nobody, Paseo de la Reforma, and Cartas de Alvaro Mutis. Poniatowska is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including a Guggenheim Fellowship and an Emeritus Fellowship from Mexico’s National Council of Culture and Arts. In 1979, she became the first woman to win the Mexican national award for journalism. Recently, Poniatowska has taught courses in creative writing, literature, journalism and translation. Her writing has been translated into numerous languages including English, French, Italian, German, Danish and Dutch. Elena Poniatowska currently lives in Mexico.

Kita y Fernanda is a look at class, immigration and women’s friendships as it follows the lives of two girls growing up in the same household; one the privileged daughter of a rich Mexican family living in Texas, the other the child of an undocumented maid. "I do what I do because I don't see images of myself onstage. I want to complicate the image of what a Latina woman is without standing on a soapbox. I'm dedicated to telling Her stories - to letting us look at life through her eyes. Teatro Luna (Chicago's All-Latina Theater Company) presents the world premiere of a play for anyone who's ever had a broken heart and tried to put the pieces back together by any means necessary: "Jarred: A Hoodoo Comedy" by Tanya Saracho, Ofner Award-winning playwright, and co-directed with Belinda Cervantes.

In search for a cure to her heartbreak after a relationship turns sour, Alicia will try anything to mend her broken heart. When yoga, therapy, meditation (you name it she tried it) don't provide her relief, her desperate search leads to a most unexpected practice: Magic. With the help of her friends , and three wise Magi, Alicia mints the underworlds of Brujeria, Santeria and Hoodoo for folk magic recipes and ancient jar spells, in a frantic attempt to get her love back.

SEPHARDIC VISIONS

Sephardic Visions incorporates the work of four artists with different ties to the Jewish and Latino traditions.

It features Argentine-born Israeli artist Liliana Livneh, world renowned abstract expressionist painter Baruj Salinas, who was born to Sephardic parents in Cuba, New Mexico's Jacobo de la Serna's exploration of his family's mysterious spiritual practices and likely Sephardic roots and Catalunyan Jordi Pedrola's moving contemporary portraits of imagined Sephardim throughout their Mediterranean dispersion.

Inspiration for the show is drawn from their varied experiences and encounters with the identity of Jews expelled from Spanish-ruled lands. From the far-flung, hidden and cryptic to the personal and even the imagined, Sephardic Visions suggests what was, what is and what might have been. Join us for a gallery reception with kosher wine and cheese.

SALUD: Healing Through The Arts

Last night I went to the National Museum of Mexican Art for the Salud: Healing through the arts. It’s a wonderful new initiative between the museum, Radio Arte and Teatro Americano.

The purpose of the project is to create dialogue and community about the issues impacting Latinos. From immigration to violence all social concerns that impact the people of these communities. The project worked with youth ranging from different ages for seven weeks. The audience was filled with family’s excited to see their kids on stage. It always excites me to see so much youth participating in the arts. The program gave them an opportunity to work with new people and learn what it takes to put on a production and radio novelas. The hands on training they got I think will open their minds to other possibilities.

As I was sitting in the audience, I couldn’t help but feel thrilled. I caught a glimmer of the next generation of Latinos in theatre slowly emerging. The show is directed by the talented and entertaining Ricardo Gamboa (Definitely one to watch) and Stephen Beaudion (yes, more rising talent). These guys cracked these kids into theatre mode. The radio novelas were facilitated by Jesús Sanchez and Tania Unzuete. They were able to pass on new skills and empower these young people to use the power of radio.

After the radio novellas and theatre performance everyone gathered around the kids. There was such a sense of community, family and creativity. I walked away feeling fabulously hopeful.

I saw Al Son Que Me Toques, Lorca at the Latino Theatre Festival and really enjoyed it. Laura Crotte did a wonderful job directing and adapting this play. This evening, on my way back home I saw a glorious full moon and it reminded me of this production. Definitely worth checking out

Raw Silk On A Sunny Day

This afternoon was a sun-filled day to devour. I jumped in a cab and headed over to Poet Lisa Alvarado's home to do an interview for our Proyecto Latina Radio Show. She had just finished trimming her black hair her radiant smile greeted me. I was a little nervous because this was the first time I was using my fabulously red tape recorder. Record, Stop, Pause went the little tape recorder.

Lisa told me about her new book Raw Silk Suture which will be released by Flor y Canto Press in September. She is also having a book release party on Sept. 20 at Decima Musa in Pilsen. It sounds like a blast! If you want to hear more about Lisa's journey as a poet in Chicago you will have to tune in to the Proyecto Latina Radio Show to be launched this September. We ended the interview by going to a little pastry shop called Crema that was absolutely sinful.

Dawn Herrera Terry is a lover of words--their sounds, their meanings and the spaces between them. A Teatro Luna Artistic Associate, Dawn presented her solo play Portales as part of the Oye/Listen! series and acted in the probadita presentation of Machos at San Antonio's Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center. Dawn also works with Stillpoint Theater and with BESITOS (Bilingual Education Students Interacting to Obtain Success) at Kansas State University to develop community-written and performed shows that put everyday truths on stage. Most recently, she co-created Walkabout Theater's War Garden, a family-friendly show about conflict and vegetables that toured to community gardens across Chicago. She is a former writer and director with the Manhattan Experimental Theater Workshop.

Dawn will present poems from her work in progress, "Rosas Encendidas." For this chapbook project, Dawn is translating love poems written over the past seven years, from Spanish to English and from English to Spanish. The poems are intricate, dreamlike and passionate explorations of past lives and loves--chisme boxes in themselves! The title of the chapbook comes from the ranchera "Los Laureles," a mariachi standard and the one Dawn always requests second, after "Volver."

Of Creativity and Cups of Coffee

I'm sitting here at the Bridgeport Café drinking coffee and jamming out to some Sonora Tropicana. There is no one here and it's perfect to get some work done. In October, I'm supposed to be the featured presenter at Proyecto Latina.

This means I will spend countless nights from August to October in my kitchen staring at the beige wall or at cafés downloading music and putzing around on Facebook. I'm trying to observe and cultivate my creative process. Sometimes nothing comes out. Not one little word.

Sooner or later, I catch up with creativity and coax it on to the page.

Well time to for some coffee and finish writing the limestone quarry article.

Summer Time In the Arts

Well, I don't know about you but I'm knee-deep in summer. I'm working on making Art Botanas purtier just for you. I will be adding more blogs and links to some wonderful online reads and resources.

I've been out and about and notice some wonderful movement for Latinos in the arts. There is the Latino Theatre Festival at the Goodman getting ready to kick off featuring work by Tanya Saracho, Laura Crotte and Marta Carasco. All good stuff and worth checking out.

I'm also excited to see Chicago Shakes reading of Romeo Y Julieta over at the Little Village H.S. and if you haven't seen Esperanza Rising check it out the Teatro Vista ensemble is still doing the magic.

At Proyecto Latina this passed Monday, Desiree Castro read from her Cabrona Chronicles and had us all in laughter. Lot's of new and emerging talent. Artist Luis DeLaTorre will be showcasing new work this Fall in his Saint or Sinner series begging the question are they santo pecadores?

Proyecto Latina is scheduled to launch Proyecto Latino Radio Show in September. Hopefully, I can figure out how to do podcasts so you can listen in from this site.

Shakespeare’s powerful story of two young lovers on opposite sides of a divided city is re-imagined in a modern, Latino community by director Henry Godinez. The tragic romance unfolds in a bilingual, Spanish and English-language world, with a cast including four-time American Latino Media Arts Award winner Elizabeth Peña. This staged reading production is accompanied by striking visuals and the live, original music of Chicago’s Luna Blues Machine.

Admission is free. The Theatre at Little Village Lawndale High School is located at 3120 South Kostner Avenue in Chicago (Kostner & 31st). Seating is first come, first served. Reservations are not required, but may be made by calling CST’s reservation line at 312.595.5460.

NOT A THING is a semi-autobiographical, memory rendition of a fictionalized retelling of a very...well, let's just say of a...a traumatic experience. It's sort of a comedy. A version of this solo was part of Teatro Luna’s “Solo Tu” in the spring of 2008. TANYA SARACHO is the co-founder and co-artistic director of Teatro Luna: Chicago's All-Latina Theatre. She is the author of the upcoming productions of: “Our Lady of The Underpass” with Teatro Vista, “Kita y Fernanda” at 16th Street Theater, and her newest work, “Jarred: A Hoodoo Comedy” opening this Fall at Chicago Dramatists presented by Teatro Luna and being read this summer at the Goodman's Latino Theatre Festival on August 13th, under Derrick Sanders direction.

MARSHA ESTELL’s play “Heat” received it’s first production at Chicago Dramatists, earning Ms. Estell a Jeff Award nomination for New Work. “Heat” was subsequently produced at the Bloomington Playwrights Project in Bloomington, Indiana, and at ETA Creative Arts foundation in 2006. Recently, she returned to the stage, performing in Wordfest 2008 and “First Breeze of Summer” at Court Theatre.

Honors include the Institute/Goodman Theatre Fellow 2008 and the LaMama Experimental Theatre International Playwrights Symposium in Spoleto, Italy. He has been featured on Russell Simmons presents Def Poetry on HBO, appeared as guest host of PBS's In The Life and co-starred on MTV LOGO's feature film, The Ski Trip.He most recently selected finalists for Best Gay Erotica 2008 and is currently working on a new poetry collection and a reprint of his fiction novel, Christ like . He is recipient of the Marsha A. Gomez Cultural Heritage Award, a NYC Council Citation and the Outstanding Excellence in Performance Arts Award from the World Pride Power conference.

Irasema González After working as a cubicle drone and toiling away vainly under bad fluorescent lights and glass ceilings Irasema Gonzalez combusted. The mid-twenties melt-down that followed resulted in extraordinary things: she quit her job, awarded herself a sabbatical, and ultimately opened Tianguis, the bookstore she always longed to walk into. She is a founding member of the Proyecto Latina reading series, a collaborative between Tianguis Books, Teatro Luna and Mariposa Atomica Ink. Her poems appeared in Between the Heart and the Land, an anthology by March Abrazo Press featuring Midwestern Latina poets. She is a graduate of Columbia College Chicago where she earned a B.A. in journalism and creative writing. She resides in Little Village with her husband and two cats.

When a terrible break-up turns Alicia's world upside down, she turns to folk magic to heal her heartbreak. With the help of her friends, and some enchanting magi, Alicia mines the underworlds of Brujeria, Santeria, and Hoodoo for magic recipes, age-old traditions, and ancient jar spells looking for a cure. Based on real and extended exchanges with practitioners of each craft, Jarred: A Hoodoo Comedy explores one of the best kept secrets in the Latino Community. Proyecto Latina is a monthly open mic bringing together the best emerging and established Latinas in the arts and is collaboration between Tianguis Bookstore, Teatro Luna and MARIPOSA ATOMICA INK.

Desiree T. Castro will be sharing some excerpts from her current project entitled, " The Cabrona Chronicles." The project explores vital turning points in women's lives. So many times I have heard: "I wasn't always like this," which prompted the exploration of the moments of transformation. What are the turning points that triggered daughters to avenge their families, wives to leave their husbands, timid girls to have fist fights, students to discipline teachers, and grandmothers to mumble in their sleep," Te estoy viendo cabrona."

Desiree's younger sister, Ginger Gallardo will be accompanying the readings with musical selections that she has written, as she has contributed to the development of "The Cabrona Chronicles."

DESIREE T. CASTRO is an actress, writer, arts-educator, dancer and mother. She was recently seen in Teatro Luna's hit play, "MACHOS," where she assumed 'Diego' as her alter-ego and was one of the collaborative writers for the play. Soon after, she wrote a Solo piece on motherhood that was featured in Teatro Luna's SOLO-TU play. Since 2004, she has been a Company Member of the renowned Barrel of Monkeys Theatre Company where she performs throughout the city in Chicago Public Schools and at the Neo-Futurarium in the ensemble's critically acclaimed on-going production, "That's Weird Grandma!" Passionate about the potential of art in society beyond her own work on stage, Castro has worked with over 2,000 school children teaching creative writing, dance and theatre with Barrel of Monkeys, Department of Children Home & Aide Society, Lifeline Theatre, Redmoon Theater, Little Village Community Development Corporation and Northeastern's Chicago Teacher's Center. Desiree has found that writing about the most embarrassing, lets-not-talk-about-it, and 'that's not important' moments, are the most liberating. We don't realize the weight of silence until we speak. Aside from her current writing projects, Desiree is also pursuing a BA in Public Policy at DePaul University and lives everyday as a balancing act between raising her 2 year old son, working, school and squeezing in the art and tacos to maintain her sanity as she envies people who sleep more than 6 hrs a night. Jerks.

Naomi Ayala is the author of This Side of Early (Curbstone Press, 2008) and Wild Animals on the Moon (Curbstone Press, 1997). Her third collection of poems is forthcoming from Bilingual Review Press in 2009. Ayalas work has appeared in numerous journals and has been anthologized in Seeds of Fire: Contemporary Poems from the Other USA (Smokestack Books/U.K., 2008), Boriquén to Diasporican: Puerto Rican Poetry from Aboriginal Times to the New Millennium (University of Massachusetts Press, 2007), The Wind Shifts: New Latino Poetry (University of Arizona Press, 2007), and Latino Boom: An Anthology of U.S. Latino Literature (Longman, 2005). Ayala works as an education consultant (with a specialty in curriculum design and development), a translator, and teacher, and is currently serving as the Director of Development for Fiesta DC.

Diana Pando is a megaphone for Latinos in the arts. From poetry to press releases she wields her communications skills to generate arts press coverage for various arts organizations. She is one of the founding members of Proyecto Latina, a collaborative between Teatro Luna and Tianguis Bookstore and former contributing writer for Dinero Magazine. She has contributed writing to Teatro Lunas critically acclaimed show MACHOS, Lunaticas, collaborated with Artist Luis DeLaTorre and maintains a blog called Art Botanas for Latinos in the arts. She is a member of the Latina Leadership Council for the Chicago Foundation for Women.

Lisa Alvarado's Mexican Woman's Toolkit, Sin Fronteras is a large floral
tote bag hanging on wooden pegs, which visitors are invited to rummage
through. The bag belongs to a Mexican domestic in WWII-era Chicago: her
life is service to others, she has no privacy.

Reimagining The Distaff Toolkit Art Exhibit

"Reimagining the Distaff Toolkit" is an exhibition of contemporary art,
each of which has, at its visible core, a tool that was important for
women's domestic labor in the past (the 18th century through World War
II). The old tool becomes the fulcrum for a work of art. Each work and the
exhibit as a whole have the power to speak to viewers independently,
Artists are placing objects such as a dressmaker’s figure, diapers,
graters, grinders, needles, pins, pots, pans, baskets,
garden-seed-packets, rakes, hoes, dress patterns, dish-rags, rolling pins,
brooms, buckets, darning eggs, knives, rug-beaters, and other tools at the
center of their work. One piece will have an early 19th century distaff at
its visible core. Part of the point of this exhibition project is to
explore the idea of "seeing as context." As I imagine the process here, I
look at a tool that facilitated very hard and repetitive labor and that
evokes women's degradation as domestic drudges. I look again, through my
early 21st century eyes, at a moment when "old tools" have become
commodified and expensive, and I see costly beauty. Reimagining the
distaff toolkit for the purposes of this exhibition might include
(overlapping) gestures in any of the following directions – or other
directions – history / memory / gender / labor / material culture /
household objects / family relations / power and powerlessness / drudgery
/ craft and beauty. Reimagining the Distaff Toolkit puts utility in
conversation with art, the past in conversation with the present.

In honor of National Poetry Month, two internationally renowned poets -- Lorna Dee Cervantes and Rigoberto González -- will read for Palabra Para at the Center on Halsted.

A fifth-generation Californian of Mexican and Native American (Chumash) heritage, Lorna Dee Cervantes has been a pivotal figure throughout the Chicano literary movement. Her poetry has appeared in nearly 200 anthologies and textbooks, and she has been the recipient of many honors, including an NEA fellowship, a Lila Wallace-Readers Digest Award and a Pulitzer nomination for her book DRIVE: The First Quartet. She lives and teaches in San Francisco, California.

Rigoberto González is the author of seven books, most recently of the memoir, Butterfly Boy: Memories of a Chicano Mariposa, winner of the American Book Award from the Before Columbus Foundation. A story collection, Men without Bliss, is forthcoming. The recipient of Guggenheim and NEA fellowships, and of various international artist residencies, he writes a book column for the El Paso Times of Texas. He lives in New York City and is Associate Professor of English at Rutgers University/Newark.

The Chicago Humanities Festival is pleased to celebrate Earth Day 2008 by remounting - all in one evening - this vivid reading of four original stage works commissioned for and presented at last fall's "Climate of Concern" Festival. Each short play profoundly and engagingly considers humanity's prospect in the face of global climate disruption, while conveying the unique voices of four remarkable playwrights: Don DeLillo (above), José Rivera (below), Lisa Dillman, and Brian Tucker. A discussion and Q&A follows the performance.

Presented by the Chicago Humanities Festival, in partnership with Goodman Theatre, Next Theatre, and Steppenwolf Theatre. Also featuring performances by Rivendell Theatre and Congo Square Theatre.

Tickets for this program are $10.
A $5 processing fee will be added to all transactions.

While I'm not working on this play, it's a play muy serca de mi corazón.

I hope it gets the press and audience that it deserves.

The cast is an amazing group of Teatro Vista ensemble that includes: Sandra Delgado, Charin Alvarez, Tony Sancho and Marcus Castillo along with some new and talented faces.

The play is written by Octavio Solis who I think is such a great contemporary American playwright. Directing this play is the silver haired thunderbolt Cecilie Keenan. I suspect she will take her already superb directing to the next level with Dreamlandia. Artist Luis DeLaTorre will be designing the set for this production.

Motherhood Isn't All It's Cracked Up To Be
In Teatro Luna's New Four-Solo Show

CHICAGO, IL- January 18th, 2008 This March, Teatro Luna takes the monologue form and kicks it up a notch, using our trademark irreverence to explore the one thing all women either fear or desire: pregnancy. From one young woman's encounter with a pro-life protest before an abortion to the way a mouse infestation threatens another woman's vision of perfect motherhood, “SÓLO Tú” presents four autobiographical looks at the joys and misconceptions of Latina motherhood. Drawing on the legend of “La Llorona/the Weeping Woman” (a mythical Mexican figure eternally searching for her lost children), Solo Tu features an original score and dark lullabies by William Kurk and Tanya Saracho, to create a haunting picture of the ways that childhood dreams of motherhood sometimes go awry.

“SÓLO Tú” is the second in Teatro Luna's SÓLO Latinas series, an ongoing project designed to incubate new solo work by Latina women. The series which has nurtured 38 solos since inception is the only project of its kind in the country, and emphasizes an ensemble approach to solo performance. “SÓLO Tú” directed by Tanya Saracho A. (“Lunaticas,” “Our Lady of the Underpass”), written by Desiree Castro, Diane Herrera, Coya Paz, and Tanya Saracho A., and featuring performances from Teatro Luna favorites Yadira Correa (“Machos,” “Lunaticas”) Dana Cruz (“S-e-x-Oh!,” “Men of Steel.”), Miranda Gonzalez (“S-e-x-Oh!,” “Lunaticas”) and Suzette Mayobre (“Sonia Flew-U/S,” “Lunaticas”). Composer William Kurk (MPAACT, WORDSfest) provides an original score with songs performed by Amanda Torres (Proyecto Latina).

Teatro Luna is Chicago’s first and only all-Latina theater ensemble dedicated to creating work that showcases the talents of Latina/Hispana artists and currently the only Latina theater company in the nation producing a full season.

The production will be performed at Chicago Dramatist, 1105 W. Chicago Ave, Chicago, IL. Previews begin on February 29 – March 2. and Opens March 6 - April 13.

Times are Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm, Sundays at 6pm. Prices are $15 general, $10 students and seniors, Special group discount of 8 or more.

A world premiere production, "MACHOS" is an interview-based play about contemporary masculinities. As always, Teatro Luna asks hard-hitting questions, such as: Exactly how did you learn to use the urinal?

"MACHOS" presents a range of true-life stories with Teatro Lunas trademark humor and unique Latina point-of-view. "MACHOS" follows Teatro Luna's critically-acclaimed shows "S-E-X-OH" and "LUNATIC(A)S." It moves beyond the everyday stereotypes of gender, offering a complex look at how 50 men (and eight Latina women) learned how to be men. Performances are drawn from interviews with 50 men nationwide and performed by an all-Latina cast in drag. After the performance there will be a reception with director Coya Paz and the actors.

Featuring Belinda Cervantes, Maritza Cervantes, Yadira Correa, Gina Cornejo, Ilana Faust, Stephanie Gentry-Fernandez and Wendy Vargas.

Paul Martinez Pompa studied at the University of Chicago and at Indiana University, where he served as a poetry editor for Indiana Review. His chapbook, Pepper Spray, was published by Momotombo Press in 2006. His work has also appeared in the journals Borderlands and Barrow Street and the anthologies The Wind Shifts and Telling Tongues. He currently teaches at Triton College in River Grove, Illinois.
